The Abensperg und Traun family originally came from Abensberg in Bavaria. The family is first mentioned in the Upper Austrian Traungau region in 1114, making it one of the five oldest extant families in Austria.

Family members have held high positions in politics, the military and the church over the centuries, playing a constant role in the history of our country.

History.

The rule of Petronell came to the family by marriage in the year 1656. The estate encompassed some 80 km² of land, containing floodplain forests, six localities from Maria Ellend to Petronell and three farming estates run by a single, large feudal administration.

Difficult conditions followed various great upheavals from the time of Empress Maria Theresia onward, including two World Wars. Since 1945, the Petronell estate has been managed independently as a legacy of the past with the castle, agriculture and forestry, and the associated real estate. However, Petronell castle passed out of the ownership of the family in 2006.

Today, three generations of the Abensperg-Traun family live on the Petronell estate (including the 20th generation to do so).

The estate.

The estate today is a partner of the Donau-Auen National Park, boasting an idyllic setting on the right bank of the Danube between Vienna and Bratislava. The property contains historic buildings and park areas, cultivated land, open fields and untouched alluvial forests, as well as large sections of the partly-reconstructed Roman city of Carnuntum. We manage and run an organic agricultural enterprise, a forestry enterprise partly integrated with the Donau-Auen National Park, the estate’s hunting and fishing grounds, renewable energy projects, the buildings of the historic complex around Petronell castle and commercial real estate in Vienna. Our diverse activities also include various youth and social projects.

Today, we are a family company with strong roots in environmental awareness. We have added some 750 ha of beautiful natural landscape to the Donau-Auen National Park in various forms, and jointly administer several areas in cooperation with the national park.

Our 310 ha organic farming enterprise focusses on natural diversity, biodiversity and the conservation of resources. Our combination of intelligent cultivation, bee-keeping, extensive animal husbandry, hunting and fishing in accordance with animal protection laws, wind and solar power generation together with a biomass district heating plant heating over 5000 m² of living space, is designed to provide a modern and holistic solution for the current era.

Our Petronell buildings are managed according to the concept of monument and ensemble protection. We also rent out commercial and residential units in Vienna. All building development and preservation works are carried out by our own construction team. From roof trusses to electrics, we do everything ourselves.

The estate also makes a voluntary contribution to the local community, including renovation works on the parish church and rectory, maintenance of walking paths and the provision of forest playgrounds for our kindergarten children.

In short, we are conscious of the times in which we live, and we embrace the duties and responsibilities of a traditional family business. We are committed to future-ready and socially aware management strategies across the board. In service to the community. Holistic. Modern. Caring.
